Security Services Working Group Purpose
Goal:
1. Identify and implement immediate needs, if any, for Security Services.
2. Identify critical needs for Security Services that could or should be met
in the next 3-4 months.
3. Recommend a longer-term framework for addressing campus security issues and
services.
4. Identify current and/or necessary policies related to 1 and 2; make recommendations
regarding these policies.
Scope:
Services that might be provided to campus units to provide for or check on campus
or unit IT security; tools that campus units might use to enhance campus IT
security; and related IT security policy identification and recommendation.
Charge:
* Understand what the current capabilities are, what needs we have or anticipate
having that current security services can't support, what is in the way of our
being able to meet these needs
* Put in place new security services or alter current security to enhance IT
security on campus
* Determine the technical, policy, and procedure options (critical needs) available
to us for moving ahead to a more secure IT environment
Near the time that the Security Services Working Group submitted their proposal for a CSIRT (see above) at UM, Provost Courant and Exec VP Slottow asked James Hilton and Laura Patterson to propose methods to reduce risk and improve IT security at UM. The IT Commons stewards, with Hilton's and
Patterson's participation, endorsed the SWG proposal as the framework for creating a security office at UM. The stewards developed a high level plan for moving forward with implementation.
The following high level plan has been approved by the IT Commons stewards group, James Hilton and Laura Patterson, and was submitted to Courant and Slottow as the approach for improving security methods on campus.
Courant and Slottow approved moving forward and on 2/13/04, Laura Patterson sent out the following email announcing the IT Security Office at UM.
