Ranked as one of the top ten academic research libraries in North America, the University Library system has 19 branches plus nine independent libraries and dozens of departmental libraries and resource centers. It is also a national leader in online resources with, as of March 2011, over 4 million digitized books. U-M has over a dozen museums and galleries including museums of art, natural history (with a planetarium), and archaeology. In addition, the university has an observatory, arboretum, and botanical gardens, all open to the public.
