EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT

U-M hosts human health and animal disease discussion

DATE: 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Jan. 24, 2006

EVENT: Eleven of 12 major global disease outbreaks in the last decade, including avian influenza, originated in animals before threatening humans. "Human Health and Animal Disease: An Epidemiologic Collision?" is a full-day symposium including:

• Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, discussing emerging infectious disease priorities for the National Institutes of Health.

• Laurie Garrett, medical and science writer for Newsday and author of "The Coming Plague: Newly Emerging Diseases in a World Out of Balance" and "Betrayal of Trust: The Collapse of Global Public Health," speaking on global health concerns.

• James Hughes, director of the National Center for Infectious Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 1992-2005, talking about the domestic and global challenges to human health.

• Lonnie King, director of the office of strategy and innovation at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, addressing the convergence of human and animal health. King is also dean of the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

• A panel discussion about avian influenza, with Arnold Monto, professor of epidemiology at U-M; Sandro Cinti, clinical assistant professor of internal medicine at U-M; Dean Sienko, acting chief medical executive of the Michigan Department of Community Health; and Sena Blumensaadt, officer in charge, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Chicago Quarantine Station.
