NSF International provides $250,000 annual scholarship fund to the U-M School of Public Health

ANN ARBOR, Mich.—The University of Michigan today announced that NSF International will provide a gift of $250,000 to the University of Michigan School of Public Health (SPH), where NSF International was originally founded in 1944 as the National Sanitation Foundation. The gift will be used to make an annual award for a graduate student pursuing a public health degree in environmental health sciences, health management and policy, or epidemiology.

"The work of NSF International has improved the lives of countless people worldwide. I am delighted that they have established this award which will support students who are working in areas of vital importance to us all," said Noreen Clark, dean of the school. "Now more than ever, we are acutely aware of the importance of food and water safety to our well being. This is an opportune moment for this generous award. It is especially meaningful to receive a gift from an organization whose roots are at SPH."

Each year, the NSF International student award will provide approximately $12,500 in support of a master's or doctoral student who is conducting specific research in, or whose research will have an impact on food safety, water quality and treatment, or indoor air. To apply for the scholarship, students will submit an application that describes their research plans. Departments will nominate students and a selection committee will determine the awardee.

The award will include an internship at NSF International Headquarters in Ann Arbor, Mich., during one summer of the recipient's program of study. The NSF gift is part of the School of Public Health's $60 million campaign, which focuses on projects and programs that advance society's health and well being. Funds will enable the School to enhance the efficiency, quantity and quality of public health initiatives through the construction and renovation of a new facility, through program support to move theoretical concepts into the world as solutions to health problems, through endowments to attract and retain the best faculty, and annual and endowment support for the brightest students.

"NSF International grew from an idea founded and nurtured at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. This scholarship is a perfect opportunity to give back to the School, and we are delighted to provide this opportunity to deserving public health students," said Kevan Lawlor, NSF International President and CEO. "This program is mutually beneficial to the School of Public Health and to NSF in supporting those students who, in turn, will advance our common commitment to public health and safety as a way of life."

NSF International, formerly the National Sanitation Foundation, was founded in 1944 as an independent, not-for-profit organization that developed national sanitation standards for the foodservice industry. Today, NSF International certifies products and writes standards for food, water, air and consumer goods around the world. More information is available at www.nsf.org

The UM School of Public Health is at the forefront of national and international public health developments and is among the nation's top schools of public health. Current research in the school directly addresses the goals outlined in the Institute of Medicine's "Healthy People 2010," a call to action on such things as promoting health for all through a healthy environment.
