New Center for Value-Based Insurance Design opens with symposium

DATE: 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Dec. 15, 2005

EVENT: "Insuring Value: Innovative Health Benefit Design to Preserve Quality and Contain Cost," a symposium to inaugurate the University of Michigan Center for Value-Based Insurance Design.

The symposium aims to examine the concept of value-based health benefit design—an approach in which costs are held down on treatments and therapies that are deemed especially important. It might mean lower costs for life-saving blood pressure medication or diabetic supplies for those who would benefit most from those treatments.

Panelists will discuss challenges facing health care purchasers and plan design strategies for employer-provided health care coverage. Panels include trends in managing health care costs, how information technology can support value-based insurance design, and incorporating innovative benefit solutions.

Andrew Webber, president and CEO of the National Business Coalition on Health, is slated to give a keynote address titled "The Impact of Rising Health Care Costs."

Michael Chernew, professor of health management and policy, is director of the Center for Value-Based Insurance Design, and A. Mark Fendrick, professor of internal medicine and health management and policy, is co-director.
