Intelligent design meets the First Amendment

DATE:
7 p.m. Feb. 9, 2006

EVENT: Lead attorneys for the plaintiffs in the Dover, Pennsylvania court case on intelligent design, Stephen Harvey of Pepper Hamilton LLP and Richard Katskee of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, will discuss the factual and legal background of this landmark case. They were counsel for the plaintiffs in the intelligent design case of Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District that was decided in Pennsylvania in December 2005.

Harvey and Katskee will discuss whether intelligent design is science or religion, why the teaching of the scientific theory of evolution continues to generate controversy, and how the controversy implicates important issues of religious freedom.

The presentation is offered as part of the winter 2006 College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA)Theme Semester, Explore Evolution.
