EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT

Google and U-M librarian to speak on research tools, applications

DATE: 2 p.m. Nov. 30, 2006.

EVENT: A discussion of MBooks and Google Book Search, led by Ben Bunnell, Library Partnerships Manager for Google Book Search, and Perry Willett, librarian, University of Michigan Digital Library Production Services.

In December 2004, Google and U-M announced an initiative to digitize the entire collection of the University Library. More than two years in the making, this landmark agreement represented not only a major change in the way that the library resources are delivered to the library's constituencies, but a manifestation of major changes in digital technologies and culture.

Two years later, the fruits of this initiative are becoming available for use, through Google's Book Search tool and through the MBooks interface provided by the U-M Library. This discussion will highlight the features of these tools, their applications in research, and their implications for the academic community and society as a whole.

PLACE: West Hall Room 411, 1085 South University. Central Campus map: http://www.umich.edu/news/ccamp.html.
