Degrees and Requirements
The University of Michigan is a complex place. It is comprised of 19 undergraduate, graduate, and professional Schools and Colleges. These Schools and Colleges have their own requirements, policies, and expectations. In order to be academically successful at Michigan, your son or daughter should be familiar with the requirements that are specific to his or her School or College.

Many students also participate in Michigan Learning Communities which may also have requirements and expectations for participants.
Degrees and Requirements
The University of Michigan is divided into several Schools and Colleges. When your son or daughter was admitted to the University of Michigan, he or she was admitted specifically to one of 12 undergraduate Schools or Colleges. For the most part, each School and College sets policies and requirements independent from the other Schools and Colleges. As a result, everything from admission credentials to graduation requirements varies by School/College. For example, it takes at least 120 credits to graduate from the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, but it takes at least 128 credits to graduate from the College of Engineering.
In addition to having different requirements, the Schools and Colleges award different degrees. For example, a student who earns a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree from the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts with a Computer Science concentration, has a different degree and has completed different degree requirements from a student who has a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (B.S.E.) degree from the College of Engineering in the Computer Science degree program.
In order to fully understand your student's degree requirements, it is best to study the information that is specific to your student's School/College. This information is normally found in the School or College "Bulletin" which is available online for most Schools and Colleges.
