At Michigan, there are 2 main types of housing: On-Campus and Off-Campus.
"On-campus"
housing is defined as housing that is owned by the University. These
include residence halls, apartments, and family housing. "Off-campus"
housing is housing that is not owned by the University. These include
apartments, houses, fraternities
and sororities, and cooperatives).
The on-campus and off-campus distinctions have no relation to the
distance from campus. In fact, some off-campus apartments are closer
to campus buildings than the residence halls are.
Regardless of the
type of housing, the University
Housing office is available to help you and
your son or daughter. University Housing has information for students
and their parents about residence
hall life, including information about what
to bring to campus, dining options, and how to get involved in residence
hall activities. The University Housing web site even has a section
to address the specific interests of parents.
University Housing also provides extensive information about off-campus housing. Although not owned by the University, off-campus apartments and houses can be listed through the University's off-campus housing listings. University Housing also provides information for first-time tenants, and a conflict resolution service.
