Some of Michigan's most educational experiences take place outside of the classroom. The University of Michigan and the Ann Arbor community offer countless opportunities for enrichment beyond academics. As parents of Michigan students we hope you will encourage your student to seek a balance between academics and extra-curricular activities. Participation in student activities outside of class not only provides a much-needed break from the intense academic rigors, but also helps many students to manage their time better, and leads to a rewarding and successful college experience.
Michigan offers about 1,000 student organizations, so there is bound to be something for everyone. There are student organizations for academic and professional interests; visual and performing arts; athletic and recreational clubs; community service; environmental interests; religious, minority and ethnic groups; political and social action; publications and media; student government; and many more. About 18% of University of Michigan students choose to participate in fraternities and sororities which recruit new students each fall. Michigan also provides sports and recreation activities for athletes of all abilities. In addition to Michigan's famous varsity sports program, Michigan provides both Club and Intramural sports.
Most
religious
faiths and traditions have representatives in the Ann Arbor
area. Many of the groups maintain student centers and campus ministries
concerned with ethical and spiritual issues as they touch on students'
lives and on the life of the University. Several of the centers
also sponsor programs which constitute a significant element of
the social, cultural, artistic, and intellectual life of the campus
community.
Beyond campus, the Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County areas offer many year-round parks and recreation activities.
