Office of the Vice President for Research
The Office for the Vice President for Research (OVPR) is engaged in a variety of activities that focus on acting ethically in research. As regulations concerning research ethics have become increasingly formalized, the strategy within OVPR has become one of proactive education. The overall goal is to avoid the necessity of sanctions. A major effort in this direction was the implementation of a computer–based education and certification to program, the Program for Education and Evaluation in Responsible Research and Scholarship (PEERRS). PEERRS modules currently available include:
- Foundations of Responsible Research Conduct
- Human Subjects Research
- Animal Research
- Conflict of Interest
- Research Administration
OVPR is also responsible for conducting investigations of all claims regarding research misconduct, which have increased in recent years. In recent years OVPR has developed thorough investigative procedures and has increased the transparency of investigative outcomes.
IU Teaching Research Ethics Workshop
The University of Michigan (OVPR) is a charter and continuing sponsor of the annual Teaching Research Ethics (TRE) Workshop at The Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics and American Institutions at Indiana University.
Over the last thirteen years, OVPR has sent upwards of 30 faculty members to the multi-day workshop in Bloomington. The workshop is particularly appropriate for faculty members wishing to include research ethics in their curricula. The Poynter Center has extensive experience in designing curricular materials for teaching the responsible conduct of research and in conducting faculty development workshops in teaching ethics.
The 2007 workshop will occur May 15–18, 2007.
Since OVPR is a sponsor of TRE, the Poynter Center will reserve two slots for UM faculty until February 28. OVPR underwrites the costs for the two faculty members selected for the two reserved slots. Additional faculty members may apply for the workshop but they must compete against other applicants and the costs are not borne by OVPR.
If you, or a faculty member you know, might be interested in this opportunity, I would appreciate hearing about it so that we can provide additional information and, perhaps, links to other faculty members who have attended in the past.
