Dances for St. Petersburg
The University Dance Company delves into St. Petersburg’s rich traditions of dance and music. Guest artist Alonzo King choreographs Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 15, while Peter Sparling and Jessica Fogel create dances to music by Stravinsky, motivated by poems of two influential Russian poets, Anna Akhmatova and Osip Mandelstam. Gay Delanghe looks at the 1904 trip to St. Petersburg by American modern dance pioneer Isadora Duncan and its influence on the legendary Russian ballet choreographer Michel Fokine, and Ruth Leney-Midkiff explores St. Petersburg’s reputation as the “Venice of the North” through the work of painter Mikhail Larionov.
