University President Erastus O. Haven greeted President Andrew Johnson during a whistle-stop visit to Ann Arbor on Sept. 5, 1866.
Among those traveling with Johnson was Secretary of State William Seward, along with Civil War heroes Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, and Adm. David Farragut. Grant and Farragut reportedly received the loudest cheers from the Ann Arbor crowd, which shouted down Johnson during his speech.
