This unique building was designed by Spencer Solon Beman in 1913. It was built as a church for members of the First Church of Christ, Scientist. The First Church of Christ, Scientist was organized in 1900. They worshiped in a home at this site until enough funds were raised to construct the church seen above. This church has a distinctively bold neo-classical style. It has been compared to Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson because of the similar Roman accents. Spencer Solon Beman has designed over 100 churches throughout 20 of the states, primarily for Christian Scientists. Most of these were done in a similar Neo-Classical style. The builders of this church were the Koch Brothers, who constructed many of Ann Arbor's buildings. The church shown above operated for over 75 years. Today, the building has been converted into a private, luxurious residence.
