Minutes of the AAUP Executive Committee Meeting of January 9, 2008
Present: M. Crichton (Chapter Treasurer), J. Lehman (SACUA Liaison), R. Lomax, J. Maddock, T. Moore, C. Smith.
M. Crichton called the meeting to order at 12:15 p.m.
Agenda. The proposed agenda was adopted by consensus.
Announcements: There were no announcements.
Death of Wilfred Kaplan: Wilfred Kaplan died on December 26, 2007, at the age of 92. C. Smith presented a brief review of Professor Kaplan's involvement with the AAUP, which started when Professor Kaplan joined the organization in 1949. He noted that Professor Kaplan had been an AAUP leader and activist at the University of Michigan, in the Michigan Conference, and at the level of the national AAUP. The Committee agreed that an article on Wilfred Kaplan should be prepared for the 2008 Annual Newsletter.
Minutes. The minutes of the December 12, 2007 meeting were adopted by unanimous consent.
Treasurer's Report. M. Crichton reported that the Chapter had received $232.30 in payroll deduction dues from the University of Michigan Payroll Office and $400 in integrated dues from national AAUP headquarters since the last Executive Committee meeting. There were no expenditures and the balance in the Chapter's checking account is $2119.94. The Treasurer's Report was adopted by unanimous consent. In response to a question, M. Crichton explained the meaning of integrated dues. The Committee also discussed the potential change in the national AAUP dues structure.
Fall Chapter Meeting. The Committee reviewed the Fall Chapter meeting and the talk that was delivered by P. Shaw, Associate Secretary in the national AAUP's Department of Organizing and Services.
Active Cases. There were no new cases. C. Smith said that the University was searching for an attorney to replace former Deputy Counsel D. Sharphorn in the area of academic and faculty affairs. Sharphorn left the University on December 1, 2007, to accept a position in the University of Texas system.
2008 Annual Chapter Meeting. The Committee decided that the 2008 annual Chapter meeting should be held at noon on Wednesday, April 30, 2008, and requested that Chapter President D. Burns ask AAUP President Cary Nelson to deliver the keynote address.
2008 Annual Chapter Newsletter. The Committee decided that Chapter President D. Burns should organize the 2008 chapter newsletter. C. Smith indicated that he would prepare an article on Wilfred Kaplan and that P. Hollingsworth would submit an article on the annual Davis, Markert, Nickerson Lecture on Academic and Intellectual Freedom.
Faculty Governance. C. Smith said that at the December meeting of the Senate Assembly there was a presentation by B. Frier and M. Thouless on the proposal to hire 100 new tenure-track assistant professors made by President Coleman in her November address to the University of Michigan Board of Regents. He added that the Senate Assembly adopted a resolution which requests that diversity be considered in the hiring of the new faculty members.
