Minutes of the AAUP Executive Committee Meeting of March 26, 2008
Present: D. Burns (Chapter President), J. Lehman (SACUA Liaison), K. Kearfott (Chapter Vice-President), R. Lomax, J. Maddock, D. Moore, T. Moore, and C. Smith.
D. Burns called the meeting to order at 12:20 p.m.
Agenda. The proposed agenda was adopted by unanimous consent.
Announcements: R. Lomax informed the Committee that an announcement of the Chapter's 2008 Annual Meeting had been added to the Chapter web page (http://www.umich.edu/~aaupum). C. Smith reminded the Committee that a memorial service will be held for W. Kaplan at 3 pm on Sunday, April 6, 2008, at the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Ann Arbor.
Minutes. The minutes of the March 12, 2008 meeting were adopted by unanimous consent.
Treasurer's Report. M. Crichton reported by email that the Chapter had received $232.30 in payroll deduction dues since the last Executive Committee meeting and that the balance in the Chapter's checking account is $2,161.99. The Treasurer's Report was adopted by unanimous consent.
Nominating Committee. T. Moore reported that there were three excellent candidates for election to the Executive Committee as members-at-large. He introduced kinesiology professor D. Moore who is one of those candidates. T. Moore added that C. Smith had agreed to run for Chapter President, K. Kearfott for Vice-President, and M. Crichton for Treasurer. The Nominating Committee is still seeking someone to stand for the position of Secretary. J. Lehman suggested that the duties of Secretary might be rotated among Committee members.
Active Cases. J. Lehman said that there were no current active cases about which he could report.
Faculty Governance. C. Smith announced that at the March Senate Assembly meeting Gina Poe (Anesthesiology and Physiology, Medical School), Mojtaba Navvab (Architecture and Urban Planning), D. Potter (Classics, LSA) and R. Frost (Information) had been elected to serve on SACUA. He said that D. Potter had opted to serve a one-year term; the other three will serve three-year terms. C. Smith also reported that emeritus chemistry professor and chair of the Committee for a Multicultural University B. J. Evans had presented a report to the Senate Assembly entitled "Trends in Minority Faculty Participation." He added that the Senate Assembly will be asked to accept this report and endorse its recommendations at its April meeting.
2008 Annual Chapter Meeting. D. Burns said that AAUP President Cary Nelson will arrive in Ann Arbor on the evening of April 29, 2008. The Committee agreed to ask C. Nelson to address those at a 6:00 p.m. dinner that evening on the reorganization of the national AAUP. The Committee asked D. Burns to place announcements of the April 30, 2008, Chapter Annual meeting in the Ann Arbor News, the Ann Arbor Observer, the Michigan Daily and The University Record.
2008 Annual Newsletter. D. Burns noted that he had only received a few of the contributions that had been promised for the 2008 Annual Newsletter. Various members of the Committee said that they would submit their contributions as quickly as possible.
State Conference Developments. C. Smith reminded the Committee that the Annual Meeting of the State Conference that will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2008, at the Eagle Crest Conference Center in Ypsilanti. He expressed the hope that there would be good attendance by Chapter members.
The meeting was adjourned at 1:30 p.m.
