Minutes of the AAUP Executive Committee Meeting of April 8, 2009

Present: C. Smith (Chapter President), J. Calhoun, M. Crichton, K. Kearfott, J. Lee (Michigan Conference Executive Director), K. Kearfott, T. Moore, R. Lomax

C. Smith called the meeting to order at 12:10 p.m.

Agenda. The proposed agenda was adopted by unanimous consent.

Announcements: C. Smith announced that the Sigma Xi annual meeting will take place today at the CC Little Building. The University Vice President for Research, Stephen Forrest, will be the keynote speaker for the meeting.

Minutes. The postponed minutes of the March 11, 2009 meeting were adopted as amended. The March 25, 2009 minutes were also adopted as amended.

Treasurer's Report. M. Crichton reported that the prior balance at the March 25, 2009 meeting was $1,652.32. There was one receipt for $241.20 and total expenditures of $690.00. The resulting current balance in the Chapter's checking is $1,203.52. The Treasurer's Report was adopted by unanimous consent.

C. Smith reported that the annual funds solicitation letter will be sent out via US mail to members by the end of the week.

Active Cases. The faculty member in current case #3 has filed an appeal with Committee A of the National AAUP.

Faculty Governance. The annual SACUA elections were held on Monday, April l, 2009. The new Chair will be Michael Thouless, a University of Michigan-Ann Arbor Chapter AAUP Executive Committee member, and the Vice Chair will be Robert Frazier, a librarian at the University of Michigan Dearborn campus.

C. Smith also announced that the proposal regarding continual enrollment of graduate students will be going to the Regents' this month.

C. Smith also provided an update on the grievance procedures process review. Faculty on the review committee strongly objected to the administratively supported mandate to retain one member of the concerned unit's faculty in the grievance proceedings. The Chair of the review committee, T. St. Antoine will mediate this issue. The next meeting of the group will take place on April 28, 2009.

Per the April 6th Michigan Daily, the Lecturer Employees Organization is planning a demonstration at the next Regent's meeting regarding the binding of their pay to Fund A parameters only. If their salaries were based on faculty compensation, they would receive the same annual increase. This issue is related to the Chapter's request for faculty and staff W-2 reports currently being requested from the University.

Report on the All Campus Labor Council. There were no items for discussion.

State Conference Developments. The annual meeting was held at the Marriott Hotel in Ypsilanti on April 4th. The meeting was successful and well-attended by both members and representatives of the Chapter Executive Committee.

National Headquarters Developments. There were no items for discussion.

New Business. The annual UM-Ann Arbor Chapter meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 29th. The annual newsletter will be mailed prior to that meeting...
