Minutes of the AAUP Executive Committee Meeting of May 13, 2009

 

Chapter Members Present: C. Smith (Chapter President), J. Calhoun, E. Chudacoff, M. Crichton, W. Ensminger J. Lee, R. Lomax, T. Moore, and M. Thouless.

C. Smith called the meeting to order at 12:20 PM.

Agenda. The agenda was approved by consensus with the addition of the summer meeting dates.

Announcements. C. Smith informed the Committee that: 1) the Annual Meeting held on April 22 at the Michigan League was well-received and very successful, and 2) the Senate Assembly will be holding a joint meeting with the Committee on the Economic Status of Faculty next Monday, May 18.

Minutes. The April 27 minutes were approved by consensus.

Treasurer's Report. M. Crichton reported that the Chapter had received $750 in donations and payroll and other dues for a total of $1,160.20. Expenditures, including $171.40 for the newsletter and AAUP and Michigan Conference dues, were $330.40. The resulting account balance in the checking account is $1,129.02. The Treasurer's Report was adopted by unanimous consent.

Active Cases. No new information has been received on Cases 1, 2, and 3. A report was received on current Case 4 activities. This case and proposed Chapter responses were discussed in executive session.

Faculty Governance. The special Task Force on Faculty Grievance Procedures has reached decision on the following proposal: 1) all but one of the Faculty Grievance Panel will be from outside the grievant's unit--with the unit's representative having to be agreed to by both the grievant and the respondent, and 2) the Faculty Grievance Monitor, appointed by SACUA, will now fully participate in the session--sharing the role with the University Faculty Human Resource representative. The proposal will next go forward to the Provost and the Deans for review, prior to being sent to SACUA.

Michigan Conference News. No report was received.

National Headquarters News. The National Annual meeting will be held in Washington DC, June 11-14. C. Smith will represent the Chapter.
