Minutes of the AAUP Executive Committee Meeting of May 27, 2009
Chapter Members Present
: C. Smith (Chapter President), J. Calhoun, E. Chudacoff, M. Crichton, W. Ensminger J. Lee, R. Lomax, T. Moore, and M. Thouless.C. Smith called the meeting to order at 12:20 PM.
Agenda. The agenda was approved by consensus.
Announcements. C. Smith informed the Committee that the Chapter has received an invitation to attend the All Campus Labor Council meeting to be held on June 22 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Minutes. The May 13 minutes were approved as modified.
Treasurer's Report. M. Crichton reported that the Chapter had received $425 in donations. Expenditures for the Annual meeting facilities at the League totaled $260. The resulting account balance in the checking account is $1,294.02. The Treasurer's Report was adopted by consent.
Active Cases. No new information has been received on Cases 1, 2, and 3. A brief update regarding Case #4 was provided in executive session. C. Smith also noted that the UM Campus Safety Department Chief McGee will be meeting for a second time in Executive session with SACUA regarding current campus issues.
Faculty Governance. The Senate Assembly met last Monday, May 20, to receive committee reports. The Secretary of the University Advisory Committee reported that the Committee had been encouraged to be more proactive in reviewing all changes in the UM Regental By-Laws, and they recommended that the Chair of SACUA have a seat at the regular monthly Regents' Meeting. Two resolutions also evolved from the Budget Study Committee, including that: 1). the brackets for staff and faculty health care benefits be replaced by a sliding scale approach, and 2) UM provide direct contributions to the Michigan Educational Trust to support faculty children at Michigan colleges. Other committee reports included: Government Relations, Finance, Student Affairs, and the Economic Status of the Faculty. J. Lee was also asked to run a variety of scenarios to determine what the change in faculty compensation would be with various salary programs, given that there may not be an annual salary increase program and that faculty will be asked to take on more of their own health care costs.
Michigan Conference News. The Board's meeting will be this weekend, May 23 and 24 in Lansing. Of note is that several regional Chapters will be negotiating new contracts this summer. No other report was received. .
National Headquarters News. The National Annual meeting will be held in Washington DC, June 11-14. C. Smith will represent the Chapter.
