Minutes of the AAUP Executive Committee Meeting of June 24, 2009
Present: C. Smith (Chapter President), J. Calhoun, E. Chudacoff, W. Ensminger. J. Lee, J. Lehman, K. Kearfott, R. Lomax; Guest: Ian Robrinson.
C. Smith called the meeting to order at 12:15 PM.
Agenda. The agenda was approved by consent.
Announcements. C. Smith informed the Committee that due to an injury M. Crichton will not be able to meet with the Committee for the rest of the summer. He will be meeting with her periodically to keep her informed and involved as Committee activities progress.
Minutes. The May 13th minutes were approved by consent.
Treasurer's Report. No report was submitted.
Active Cases. Several cases have been referred to the National Committee A regarding improper processes. Updates regarding Case #1, #2, #3, and #4 were provided in executive session.
Faculty Governance. J. Lehman will continue to represent the Chapter in relation to Case #2 and a potential meeting with the Department of Safety Oversight Committee. AAUP will have a representative attend if the meeting takes place. Guest, I. Robinson, invited Chapter members to the upcoming Lecturer Employees Organization (LEO) All-Campus Labor Council meeting. He also noted that: 1) LEO has salary data regarding UM employee total compensation by department and position, 2) the organization continues to be concerned regarding the proposed changes in UM employee health benefits, 3) both Leo and the Operating Engineers' contracts will be up in 2010, and 4) a goal of LEO is to build solidarity across the unions on campus. It was subsequently agreed that J. Lee and I. Robinson will work together on cooperative plans for addressing their constituents' needs.
Michigan Conference News. No report was received.
National Headquarters News. The National Annual meeting was held in Washington DC, June 11-14 at the same time as the Symposium on the Globalization of Academic Freedom. C. Smith, who represented the Chapter, reported that: 1) the new Treasurer for the national organization is from Eastern Michigan University, 2) the primary focus during the next year will be the re-building of the organization due to the decline in membership, 3) a change in the dues structure for advocacy chapters, such as the University of Michigan Chapter, is also being considered based on income versus position, and 4) G. Rhodes, the new General Secretary , will be attending the Wayne State meeting in October. He is also considering the invitation to address our Chapter this Fall.
