IN THIS ISSUE
Through its Annual Newsletter the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor Chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) brings to faculty, staff, and students items related to preserving and promoting the well-being of the professoriate, enhancing the quality of instruction, and serving the educational interests of the public. This year a new prescription-drug-benefits program has been put into effect for employees of the University of Michigan which, according the University President Mary S. Coleman, will result in a savings of $1.6 million for the University but which also constitutes a major shift in the cost of the prescription-drug benefits to University employees. Cuts in the state appropriation for higher education put into place by former Governor John Engler and proposed by current Governor Jennifer Grandholm have caused a budget crisis at the University. To address these decreases in state funding, the University administration is considering further changes in benefits that could result in a substantial salary reduction program for current faculty and staff. Various aspects of these and other issues are addressed in this year’s newsletter.
