Latinos and U.S. Sports

This website is focused on the proliferation of Latinos in sports in the United States. We will try to explain the barriers that Latinos faced in breaking into the four major sports in the United States. Baseball is the most visible sport where Latinos have prospered. From Roberto Clemente to Manny Ramirez, Latinos are a dominant force in Major League Baseball. We will also focus on the peripherals of Latinos and sports as well. Former players have set up baseball schools in their native countries in order to help current Latinos reach their potential as baseball players in the majors.

Once we look at the NBA, NFL, and NHL, the presence of Latino players is nowhere near the level of Major League Baseball. Why is there such a disparity between baseball and the other three major sports? What must supporters of basketball, football, and hockey do in order to spark an interest within the Latino community? Answers to these questions lie within the culture of Latinos and the availability of sports in their communities. Issues such as role models, exposure, and socio-economic problems might shed light on the lack of Latino participation outside of baseball.
