Washtenaw Housing Alliance

Washtenaw Housing Alliance (WHA) is a group of 10 non-profit organizations dedicated to improving the housing and shelter services for at-risk people in Washtenaw County. The aim of this alliance is to end homelessness in Washtenaw County. They have developed a blueprint to end homelessness which is a detailed plan that hopes to provide permanent and supportive housing for those in need. The WHA works in conjunction with the community and its supporters to better the current homeless situation in Washtenaw County.

 

Housing Services

This website details what the Washtenaw County Office of Community Development seeks to accomplish. These goals include providing affordable rental housing units for lower income residents, increasing the quality and safety of current supportive housing for disabled individuals and those at risk for homelessness, increasing homeownership opportunities for individuals with low incomes, improve target neighborhood conditions. It also provides the plans that have been established to accomplish these goals. These include the Housing Rehabilitation Program, the Homeownership Assistance Program, the Production of Affordable Housing, and the Developer's Guide.

 

Washtenaw Affordable Housing Corporation

Washtenaw Affordable Housing Corporation (WAHC) is a private nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing and preserving the supply of good quality housing in Washtenaw County that is affordable to households earning at or below 50% of the area median income based on family size. Washtenaw Affordable Housing Corporation owns 123 housing units that include 1, 2, and 3 bedroom apartments. The rent for these apartments is below market to ensure that low income individuals are afforded the opportunity for decent housing. Interested individuals are asked to fill out an application available on their website and inquire via phone at 734-747-6824.

 

Sublet.com

Sublet.com is a national website dedicated to providing tenants and landlords a global marketplace on which to post/find their housing needs. The website provides apartments and rooms directly from the owner. Subletting can be a desirable option for individuals on a budget because sublets are oftentimes less expensive than normal rent because tenants are eager to get the apartment off their hands. Finding sublets can be very difficult and too often, a third party is involved and usually requires a fee for service. Sublet.com provides an online venue for direct communication between apartment seeker and renter to elimate the potential cost of third party involvement.

CityTownInfo.com is also a national website that provides users with real estate information and mortage quotes based on location. Visitors to the website are asked to enter their zip code and search results are displayed for that area. The site provides a list of mortage lenders, credit unions, credit counselors, and banks in the area. Also available is a loan calculator which allows users to input some of their financial information and receive an estimated maximum loan size. Location-specific statistics on housing expenses, heating costs, and mortages are also listed.

 

How to apply for Housing Assistance

This website provides a detailed step-by-step guide to applying for government housing assistance. Government housing assistance is available to people with low and moderate incomes, including the elderly and disabled. The federal government offers housing assistance through the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). HUD also contracts with state and local agencies to make sure everyone has access to safe and affordable housing. Also provided on the website is a list of tips and warnings.
