Support groups offer a wide range of advantage for members of the Latino community hoping to expand their horizons.  Organizations like Safe House offer daycare for abused women and their children, and a judgment free zone in which women can receive help in an effort to break the pattern of abuse.  Other websites allow for social interaction over a variety of realms and provide many opportunities for Latino college students, Spanish singles and families to join together via sporting events, Spanish social groups, Salsa dance lessons, specific cultural associations, available latin-based fraternities and mentoring programs and medical associations.

 

The following list are links to the various community based organizations dedicated to Latinos:

Assisting Latinos to Maximize Achievement (ALMA)

ALMA is a program designed to introduce incoming Latino/a students to both the Latino community and the resources of the University at large. The program is designed and run by a core group of students in collaboration with the Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs (MESA). The core coordinators meet year-round.

 

Asociacion Latina Alcanzando Sueno (ALAS)

ALAS is an organization run by University of Michigan bilingual students and members of the wider Latino community in order to support the Latino Community in this region through bilingual tutoring services for the youth, ESL for adults, cultural programs, translation services for the families and other multicultural events.

 

Brasisian Student Association (BSA)

We are a group whose primary objectives are to promote an environment where Brazilian culture can thrive, provide an environment where Portuguese can be spoken, educate the campus about Brazil, its culture, and its language, and finally provide an environment where friendships can be made.

La Voz Latina

La Voz Latina is a Pan-Latino student organization dedicated to addressing the various needs of Latinos at U of M. Through social, educational, cultural, and political functions we strive to be the collective voice of the Latino community. "La Voz Latina: Louder, Stronger & United."

The Puerto Rican Association “PRA”

Puerto Rican Association is to promote interest while facilitating communication and friendship between the Boricua community. The purpose of the Puerto Rican Association is to spread knowledge, facilitate friendship and celebrate the Puerto Rican culture while working with other student groups and the community around the University of Michigan. Some of our activities include the Puerto Rican Week, Los Reyes Magos and Dance & History Activities.

 

SafeHouse Center

SafeHouse Center provides support, advocacy and resources for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence and their children, and works relentlessly to change the systems and attitudes that allow abuse to occur. Their services include a 24-hour helpline (734-995-5444), SafeHouse shelter available for emergencies, non-residential counseling , legal advocacy, and children's services .The website also provides a list of emergency numbers to be used when in immediate danger.

 


Spanish Speakers Get-togethers

This website provides members the oppotunity to search for meetups in their area focusing on identified criteria. Users create a profile and can sign up for get togethers in their area and well as communicate via messaging to other users. The website allows for members of a community to join and meet based on specific interests and hobbies. For newcomers to a community, this website serves as a first step in finding other people with something common interests or hobbies as you.


Ann Arbor Calendar of Events: Clubs, Social Groups, and Hobbies

This website contains a calendar of events occurring in Ann Arbor. The events vary from month to month. The website can be used by newcomers to the community to provide options for possible activities. Some of the activities include bridge, scrabble, and knitting. Not only does the website give you something to do but it also provides you with perfect opportunities to practice your English with native speakers!
