Artist Biographies

Juana Alicia

Muralist and educator who has been teaching for 25 years.  Uses artwork as a medium to educate the community about women and their fight for social justice 1.

Cecilia Alvarez

Born in National City, California.  Her mother was Mexicano and her father, Cubano.  She received her education at California State University, San Diego.  She is a leading voice in the Chicana Art movement 2

Judith Francisca Baca

Born to Mexican American parents on September 20, 1946; Baca is currently a professor at UCLA in the department of fine arts.  She is a well-known artist and activist and particularly interested in murals.  After graduating from California State University, she created LA’s first mural program and she founded SPARC 3.

Yreina Cervantez

Born 1952 in Garden City, Kansas, Yreina is a painter who is currently the multicultural coordinator at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery.  She is famous for many of her pieces of public art, such as “La Ofrenda” and “What I See Can be Me” 4.

Alma Lopez

Born in Mexico, and raised in Los Angeles.  Alma Lopez is a visual and public artist.  She is well known for creating photo-based digital images.  She likes to explore the role of technology with contemporary artists 5.

Ana Mendieta

Born November 18, 1948 in Havana, Cuba. She moved to the United States at age 13 and attended the University of Iowa in the late 1960s.  A common theme of her pieces was violence against the female body.  She died on September 8th 1985, falling from the 34th floor of a building, in what is thought to have been a suicide 6.

Laura Molina

Born in East Los Angeles in 1957.  She is a descendent of two farming families who were made United States citizens as a result of the Treaty of Guadalupe.  After graduating high school she received education from a multitude of institutions including: California Institute of the Arts, Art Center College of Design, American Animation Institute, and Antelope Valley College 7.
