Intro to Latino/a Studies

The blossoming of artistic expression was a major element of the Chicano movement of the 1960s and 70s. Visual art, literature, music, theater, and dance flourished during this time period and were fueled by political activism and a heightened sense of cultural pride. However, much of Chicano art was excluded from mainstream museums and institutions. In fact, Chicano artists rejected this elitist world of museums, galleries, and institutions, preferring instead spaces and mediums that would make the art accessible to its people. Popular forms were murals, posters, and silk screens, which all possessed the qualities necessary to get through to the masses. Art played a significant role in demonstrations, rallies, protest marches, and community events.

The purpose of our website is to discuss the Chicano Movement of the 60s and 70s (its roots, major struggles, successes, failures, leaders, symbols) and give an overview of the art that emerged from this period. Our website also contains a gallery of 11 pictures we have picked. We chose to focus on silk-screen posters.
