The lecture presented by Dr. Benamou focused on the historical relevance of documentaries, specific filmmakers, motivations, and examples of possible perspectives. This lecture was extremely complimentary to the reading we did by Jimenez because it helped us to further understand the role of film as a political tool and means of achieving specific goals. One of the points we considered really important from Dr. Benamou’s lecture is the effectiveness of the specific style of documentaries. This helped to further reinforce our point of the power of media.  Dr. Benamou also provided great sources to look at for research.

The article, Changing U.S. Audience Poses Test for a Giant of Spanish TV, addresses the evolution in the preference of programs of Latin American television viewers. One of the major things that are attributed to change in the preference of television viewing is the assimilation which is taking place in households with American born Latinos. The Bravo website also helped to explain some effective marketing tools for marketing to the Latino community.

Rodriguez, Clara E. Latin Looks: Images of Latinas and Latinos in the U.S. Media. Westview P, 1997. 2-129.

The book, Latin Looks: Images of Latinas and Latinos in the U.S. Media, was the most valuable book to our research. Latin Looks: Images of Latinas and Latinos in the U.S. Media begins by placing Latinos and media in a historical context backed up with studies and theories and then evolves to examine the issue through various essays. The essays are extremely powerful in forcing the reader to consider the stereotypes and politicization of Latinos through media. Many of the concepts in this book were relatable to lectures we heard in class and the readings we read which proved to be reminiscent of other issues facing Latin Americans which have been politicized and manipulated as well.
