The American Classical League was founded in 1919 for the purpose of fostering the study of classical languages in the United States and Canada. Membership is open to any person who is committed to the preservation and advancement of our classical inheritance from Greece and Rome. The League includes teachers of Latin, Greek, and Classics on elementary, secondary, and college levels. The League is celebrating its 89th anniversary in 2008. National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) Seeks to Expand Certifications for World Language Teachers ACTFL in collaboration with the national language-specific organizations, including the American Classical League, is working with NBPTS to expand certifications available to language teachers. Sherwin Little, ACL President, attended a meeting in Washington, DC recently at which this topic was discussed. ACL has recommended Classicists to serve on a committee that will revise the current standards. After that, work will begin in devising a method to offer certificates to a broader range of languages and levels beyond the current certificates for middle and high school teachers of French and Spanish. |
