welcome

Student Members of the American Chemical Society at the University of MichiganStudent Members of the American Chemical Society at the University of Michigan (SMACSUM) is a group dedicated to making chemistry accessible to all people, especially students of all majors. We sponsor various activities, including informal dinners with faculty members regarding their current research and visits from guest lecturers who present topics of their choice. We also try to reach out to non-science colleagues and K-12 students. Our main events include National Chemistry Week, Kids Fair, and Sciencepalooza! We want to meet other students interested in and involved with chemistry!

SMACSUM is a student-run subset of the professional chemistry guild the American Chemical Society. Founded in the year 1876, ACS is a self-governed individual membership organization that consists of more than 158,000 members. ACS provides opportunities for advancement within chemistry by posting internships and job possibilities, interacting with the community, offering professional advice from experts in the field, and promoting organizational and leadership skills. ACS also publishes highly regarded chemistry journals, such as JACS (Journal of American Chemical Society), JOC (Journal of Organic Chemistry), and Organic Letters, to help you, as a member, stay up to date with the latest cutting-edge research.

All UM students are welcome to participate in SMACSUM activities without paying dues, but we encourage you to apply for official national membership (Click Here). As a special incentive, the first year of your membership will be reimbursed in full to you by the local ACS chapter! Just email Andrew Rasmussen (andyras@umich.edu) for details!
