Department Review!

During the 2006-07 school year, we tried to increase membership, both locally and nationally. Our faculty advisor, Dr. Paul Jones, worked with the local Huron Valley chapter in order to provide reimbursement for all students who became official ACS-SA members. As a result, we increased the number of officially registered ACS-SA members to 15.Additionally, we tried to increase participation locally. We increased the number of officers to 12. We also increased our expectations for officers to ensure that each officer is committed to the organization. All officers became official ACS-SA members (the equity issues were resolved with the reimbursement program).

We also tried to increase general participation by planning fun events that students would want to participate in. We conducted experiments in the Chemistry atrium during National Chemistry Week, and we performed demonstrations for kids at the Hands-on Museum and during Kids Fair.

In addition, we tried to spread the word about ACS-SA on campus by advertising more than we ever have! We also put out a newsletter for the students and faculty and organized a Green Chemistry Awareness Day in order to inspire students to care about green chemistry. As a result of our efforts, our email list now has over 200 students. Typically, between 15 and 30 students come to our events.
This year has been very successful for our student affiliates group! We now have a dedicated group of officers and enthusiastic members.

Abstract  Going from almost zero to more than sixty active members in less than a year, the University of Michigan American Chemical Society Student Affiliate chapter is a success story about revitalizing a struggling chapter. Innovative officer positions, increased delegation of authority, and courage to try new ideas generated this special chemistry. In order to encourage each member to be creative and reach his or her full chapter potential, the officers stressed, lsquoDream of an outstanding activity, and everyone will make it happen.rsquo Strategically, this philosophy was reinforced by electing members who had spearheaded projects to the new officer positions. In the following article, we will present the events and philosophies that created the strong intra-Student Affiliate and inter-Student Affiliate/community chemical bonds.
