Chapter Committees

To get involved with a chapter committee, please contact the committee chairs. Chairs are selected at the beginning of the academic year.

Bioethics

The newest of our chapter's committees, Bioethics is working on developing a local high school bioethics education initiative, similar to one developed at University of Pennsylvania. The program would facilitate regional teacher training programs on bioethics issues, providing teachers with curricula and lesson plans. Teachers would receive continuing education credits from the state Dept. of Education.

Health Policy

Committee members participate in health policy lunch talks, "Policy at the Pub" events, and faculty discussions. Lobbying at the state level is another possibility for interested members.

National Service Project

AMA-MSS chooses a new National Service Project every two years. The committee partners with Project Health Schools to send volunteers to teach middle school students about nutrition and physical activity. NSP also works with OMSE, PsychSIGN, and IMSIG to put on "Wellness Week" events for medical students.

Resolutions

Committee members research and write resolutions to add to or alter state and national medical society policy. The committee also runs resolutions writing workshops for new members and plans caucus meetings before each major conference to decide how delegates will vote and represent UMMS.

Community Service

Previous chapter community service events, planned by this committee, include canned food drives, "Teddy Bear Clinics" for children, and panel talks for World AIDS Week. Newer initiatives include setting up service events at Ronald McDonald House and collecting needed supplies for local schools through an "Adopt-a-School" program.
