Welcome to the American Medical Student Association (AMSA) -- the largest and oldest student-run medical association in the country and the largest student group at the University of Michigan Medical School.
AMSA is committed to improving health care and health care delivery for all people: promoting active improvement in medical education; involving its members in the social, moral and ethical obligations of the profession of medicine; assisting in the improvement and understanding of world health problems; contributing to the welfare of medical students, interns, residents and post-MD/DO trainees; and advancing the profession of medicine.
This is an especially exciting time to join AMSA. We have nearly a dozen action committees that carry out our projects, ranging from working at the Delonis Free Health Clinic to lobbying the Michigan State Legislature to pass a bill that bans smoking in bars and restaurants. Whether your passion is global health, local community education, or making our hospital more 'green', AMSA is an organization with something for everyone.
There are amazing opportunities for student leadership through AMSA, from local chapter officers (M1s are eligible for a seat on our board) to national leadership positions. AMSA also organizes leadership institutes and conferences at the state and national levels. The University of Michigan itself has a proud tradition of AMSA leadership: several students currently serve in national positions and the first national AMSA president was a University of Michigan Medical School student.
