*YOU MUST BE A MEMBER OF THE AMERICAN ORIENTAL SOCIETY TO PRE- SENT A PAPER AT THE CONFERENCE. Membership information is available in all issues of the Journal of the American Oriental Society, as well as at the American Oriental Society website:
Accepted papers will be allotted up to 20 minutes for presentation, followed by approximately 10 minutes for discussion. There will be no designated “discussant” for any panel. You should re- ceive the final program by mid-September.

All panels, as well as the business meeting and banquet, will be held at the Inn at Laurel Point,
680 Montreal Street, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada V8V 1Z8. This is the same hotel at
which we met in 2006.

The Banquet will be a buffet including vegetarian options. Please give early notice of any dietary
The traditional Presidential Banquet Address will be delivered after the banquet by the Western
Branch President, Professor Michael Fuller of the University of California, Irvine.

We have contracted group conference rates at The Inn at Laurel Point for our conference at-
tendees ( The preferred rates are as follows; Laurel Wing Gues- troom CAD$94/night and Erickson Wing Studio Suite CAD$144.00/night, subject to applicable taxes. These rates are available for reservations made prior to Thursday, September 3, 2013. Rooms are single or double occupancy, with a charge of $25 for additional adult guests. The Inn
offers, subject to room availability, up to three additional nights at the conference rate before and after the meeting. Reservations made after September 3, 2013 will be subject to availability. Please book your accommodations early by calling the Inn at Laurel Point reservations depart- ment at 1-800-663-7667 or 250-386-8721. For ease of booking please mention the group reserva- tion for “Western Branch American Oriental Society” to get the conference rate. Please note that fees for the use of the conference rooms at the Inn will be reduced provided that at least 75
room-nights (25 times 3 nights) are booked by Association members. It is thus important that participants plan to stay at the Inn to avoid the Branch incurring heavy costs.

Victoria has an international airport, but most participants will need to transfer in Seattle or Van- couver. A taxi from the airport is likely to cost $60 or more, but the Airporter van service can transport passengers to the Inn at Laurel Point efficiently for much less. If time permits, an at- tractive alternative is to fly to Vancouver, then take the direct bus to Victoria via the BC Ferry. The ferry crossing takes about an hour and a half, the Vancouver side passing through open wa- ters for about 30 minutes (allowing for a meal in the buffet or café) and the rest offering scenic views of many of the Gulf Islands. Participants coming to the meeting by automobile for whom the BC ferry is inconvenient can take instead the less scenic Coho ferry, which leaves from Port Angeles, Washington, and arrives only a block from the Inn at Laurel Point.
Important: Note that US citizens should carry a passport when coming to Canada; no visa is required. Nationals of other countries should make early inquiries for details of border crossing requirements. The Western Branch offers to reimburse graduate student participants who are re- quired to pay visa fees in order to attend the meeting and present a paper.

About the only certain statement that can be made about the weather in Victoria is that August is
warm and dry. Over all, Victoria gets half the annual precipitation of Vancouver or Toronto. Ear- ly October is usually glorious, but the operative word is ‘usually’. Participants should be pre- pared for the possibility of cool weather or showers.
