Dear Apple IIGS Owner:
 
 Apple is pleased to extend to you a free chip upgrade that will enhance
 the performance of your Apple IIGS personal computer.
 
 The Video Graphics Controller (VGC) chip -- which generates the video output
 for your Apple IIGS -- may occasionally produce some flickering and pink tones
 when black-and-white programs are displayed on a color monitor in double-high-
 resolution mode.  Also, some rarely used color combinations may cause
 characters to flicker in the standard text mode.
 
 Although you may have never noticed these minor problems, Apple would like
 to correct them for you, free of charge.
 
 Simiply take your Apple IIGS to any authorized Apple dealer.  He or she will
 replace the old VGC chip with a new chip that resolves these problems.  And,
 for any inconvenience you may have experienced, your Apple dealer will also
 install, at no charge, a new, enhanced version of the Apple IIGS ROM chip.

                        VGC and ROM Upgrade for the IIgs
                        --------------------------------

 Beginning August 1, 1987 TWO FREE CUSTOMER COMPONENT UPGRADES will be available
 for the Apple IIgs from Apple Service.
 
 The new ROM corrects minor bugs and provides enhancements for future software
 releases.
 
 A new VIDEO GRAPHICS CONTROLLER CHIP (VGC) corrects video display problems
 that may occur in double hi-res and standard text mode.
 
 To determine if you need either the VGC or ROM upgrade, check the first three
 digits of the serial number on the bottom of your IIgs and use the chart below
 to determine what upgrade, if any is required:
 
    Units with numbers 704 or lower require both the new VGC and ROM
    Units with numbers 705 - 724 (inclusive) require only the new ROM
    Units with numbers 725 or higher do NOT require any upgrade
 
 However, since some systems may have had logic board swaps since date of
 purchase, it is useful to to check the individual VGC and ROM numbers on the
 main logic board to insure that an upgrade is indeed required.  Please refer to
 the chart below:

 All registered GS owners should have received a postcard from Apple announcing
 the upgrade.  If you have not received a postcard, you may have forgotten to
 send it in, or your notification may have gotten lost in the shuffle of mail.
 Don't worry about it.  You do NOT need the postcard in order to get the upgrade
 .
 
 CALL your dealer and give him your serial number and ask him to order the VGC
 and/or ROM upgrade for you.  Your dealer has to order the parts for you, and
 he may place you on a waiting list.  This is normal.
 
 You will not be able to keep your old ROM.  The dealer has to return it to
 Apple in order to get his credit and payment.  Please don't ask him to allow
 you to keep it.  He can't.
 
 At this time, we have not received any information on what bugs were fixed in
 the ROM and what changes have been made for future software compatibility.
 When the list becomes available, and I receive permission to post it, I will do
  so.
 The dealers also do not have this information.

 regional Technical Support Group for information.
