25 July 1994 Hi, The Arabic Linguistics Society Electronic Bibliography of references to Arabic Linguistics since Bakalla (1983),including references from about 1979 on, is ready to be downloaded and used. Many, but not all, of the references include keywords which will help in electronic searches. The files are in Endnote Plus format, both for the Mac and for the PC. They are extremely useful, but only if you have access to Endnote Plus, which can be obtained from any of the mail order software catalogues. (I highly recommend you obtain this program; I believe it is well worth the cost.) The ASCII text file (arablingbib.txt) is of the references only, and could be used with grep, or the FIND feature of an editor or word processor to find words from titles, or it could simply be printed out or looked through. The Mac file (arablingbib.sit.hqx) is "Stuffed" and "BinHexed", and must be de-archived. The program "de-archiver" may be downloaded from the "linguistics" directory in the Michigan archives for this purpose. The PC file (arablingbib.zip) is "Zipped" and must be unzipped. It is a binary file, unlike the others; use the ftp "binary" command before the "get" command. The program "zip.exe" may be downloaded (also in binary mode) from the "linguistics" directory in the Michigan archives for this purpose. Contact your local computer guru for further details. Note that these file names are not legal under DOS, so if you are downloading these files to a DOS computer, choose a name (usually shorter) that is legal. The current version includes only English language articles, excludes reviews, articles about Arabising computers, and about Arabic language pedagogy. These may be added later. The bibliography will be updated, hopefully about once a year, or as users send in corrections and additions. Please send all communications about these files to: Dilworth B. Parkinson parkinsonD@yvax.byu.edu Note that this readme file will be changed each time the file is updated.
