History:
* Modest Beginnings - The club was started by two graduate students (Francis Garcia and Tom Sy) becuase they were taking jiu-jitsu classes 15 miles away but didn't have the time to drive there every night of the week to train. They simply wanted a place on the university campus to do so and the only way RecSports would allow them to use the wrestling mats was if they were an official RecSports club.

* Difference in ideology - After the first year, Francis Garcia notcied that practice, at the time being taught by Tom Sy, was becoming boring and the club needed a lift, some kind of motivation. He suggested to Tom, who was the President at the time, to implement an in-house tournament to create some excitement in the club and give the members a goal to practice for. Tom found the idea disgusting and told Garcia "If you want to create your own Bad Boy club, then I'll just start my own club." Tom Sy stepped down as president the following year, and the first In-House Tournament (called the 2000 Michigan Classic) was implemented with great results and survives to this day. Tom Sy never started his own club.
