I am Adrienne Gibson and I am a true “army brat.” I’m a sophomore, planning to major in Political Science at the University of Michigan. ROTC is a major part of my life, but it's never compromised my identity as a student. Its given me an opportunity to train myself, mentally and physically, and has taught me that the only boundaries that exist are the ones you place on yourself. I’ve learned a lot about time management and have had a complete college experience for the past year and a half while staying focused and motivated through the ROTC program.
I was Born in Fort Benning, Georgia and most of my childhood was split between New York and Alabama, I attended seven different school districts in-between. I joined the ROTC after being inspired by my mother, a LTC, and my step-father a retired drill Sargent and MP. The Army has introduced me to great people I never would have met other-wise.
Through ROTC I’ve done some amazing things at Michigan most people wouldn’t even think about. Not a lot of freshmen get to repel off the Dentistry Building or shoot M-16's, not to mention riding in a Black Hawk. Being part of ROTC is being part of a family, its a special sort of bond that not a lot of people can understand. When you spend as much time together as we do you get to know each other outside of the typical college scene, you get to know one another as an extension of yourself.
My favorite part is testing what I learned in Military Science class – through land navigation, when you’re put out in the middle of no where at night with only a flashlight, map and compass you learn a lot about your strengths as a person.
