Winning the Asian Healthcare Game: How Global Leaders Play the Odds

Market complexity, entrenched local competition, evolving regulatory landscape: they are just a few of the challenges facing the global healthcare companies as they are entering and growing the booming markets in Asia. The most successful companies have garnered an expertise that makes their viewpoints regarding the Asian market essential and immediate for anyone interested in the region and the field.

This year's Healthcare Panel features speakers from prominent market leaders: Baxter, Johnson & Johnson, and Pfizer. Our three speakers will share their insights in sustaining growth and success in the Asian healthcare markets.

Lester Lee
Worldwide Vice-President, E-Business, Johnson & Johnson GATEWAY, LLC / Johnson & Johnson Health Care Systems Inc.

As Worldwide Vice-President for E-Business, Lester has responsibility for driving a global e-business roadmap for the Medical Device and Diagnostic sector. In the past few years, Johnson & Johnson has seen a significant growth in the use and adoption of e-commerce activities through Johnson & Johnson GATEWAY (www.jnjgateway.com) and through Global Healthcare Exchange (GHX), an industry start-up which Johnson & Johnson co-founded in the year 2000 with other major manufacturers such as GE Medical Systems, Medtronic, Abbott and Baxter.

Lester joined J&J in 1986 recruited through the IMBA program, the fore-runner of the current IRDP Program, to begin his career as a sales representative for ETHICON in Malaysia. He has had increasing responsibilities in Asia Pacific region including a regional role as Franchise Manager and also Country Manager. In 1994, Lester helped launch Ethicon sutures in China as a member of the pioneering management team on assignment to Shanghai. Johnson & Johnson Medical China was among the first few foreign companies in China to establish a direct sales and marketing presence in medical devices. One of Johnson & Johnson’s significant accomplishment was the development of the Strategic Partnership Program with the Ministry of Health in China in 1995 providing assistance to the Chinese healthcare professionals in areas such as advanced education, regulatory affairs, science and technology and primary healthcare. Prior to relocating to the US, Lester was the General Manager in Asia Pacific for Global Healthcare Exchange driving marketplace assessment and business development acitivities in key markets such as Australia, Singapore, Korea and Japan.

Lester graduated from Claremont McKenna College, CA with Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Science. He completed his graduated work at the University of Chicago where he obtained his MBA in Finance and Marketing, and MA in Public Policy and is also a CPA (Certified Public Accountant).


Wayne Heminway
Director, Global Pharma Business Development, BioPharma Solutions, Baxter International Inc.

Wayne Heminway is responsible for growing Baxter's B2B (OEM) business in Asia, Europe, and Latin America. Within Asia the primary focus is on Japan. He works very closely with Baxter's affiliate in Japan with the purpose of contract manufacturing, feasibility and formulation of intravenous pharmaceuticals. He is also involved in M&A activities.

Wayne recently held the position of group market manager for the Strategy and Market Development team. In this role he was responsible for managing an international team with responsibility for Europe, Canada, ICLA, Asia, and Japan. He helped drive success and growth through defining and globally aligning strategy from the countries and regions. He has also been the key driver from GDD in market development and opportunities for Japan, including negotiations with Japanese pharmaceutical companies.

Wayne joined Baxter over 15 years ago and has an impressive breadth of experience including US sales administration, computer software development and IT support, and financial and clinical consulting. He also served as a key team member working with the National Accounts team in negotiation of the Premier, Columbia, DOC, and other GPO contracts. Wayne received his B.S. degree from the University of Arizona and his MBA from Washington State University and is currently attending the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business Executive Education.


Hiroshi Yamabe
Senior Manager, Product Evaluation Group - Dermatology
Worldwide Marketing, Pfizer Global Pharmaceuticals, Pfizer Inc.

Hiroshi joined Pfizer in 2003 and brought with him 10 years of strategic marketing experience with major pharmaceutical companies in Japan and in the States. Being a veteran in pharmaceutical product marketing, Hiroshi possesses all-rounded expertise in initiating launches, driving sales, developing competitive responses and fostering global synergies for major drugs.

Hiroshi has been deeply involved in the marketing of Cabaser, a major Parkinson's disease drug, since its launch in the late 90's by Pharmacia (now part of Pfizer) in Japan. In his present role in Pfizer, he successfully leverages his past product and market experience to cultivate Pfizer's exclusivity opportunities and establish worldwide commercial strategies for Cabaser and other pharmaceutical products.

Hiroshi is a licensed pharmacist in Japan, and a MBA graduate from the Fuqua School of Business, Duke University.


Jersey Liang (Moderator)
Professor, University of Michigan School of Public Health

Jersey Liang is a Professor of Health Management and Policy and a Senior Research Scientist at the Institute of Gerontology. He received his Ph.D. in Sociology from Wayne State University in 1978. Dr. Liang's research interests focus on health related quality of life and geriatric care from a cross-cultural comparative perspective. His current research centers around three major themes. First, Liang is interested in issues related to the conceptualization and measurement of quality of life at the individual level and the estimation of health expectancy at the population level. Second, he is interested in modeling the dynamics of health and health care in old age. The third interest concerns the comparative analysis of geriatric care management and policy. Since the mid-1980s, Liang has been actively engaged in comparative studies of health, health care, and aging in the U.S. and several countries in East Asia. Longitudinal data bases involving population based samples of elderly people have been established and maintained in the United States, Japan, Taiwan, and China. In addition, Liang has collaborated in research regarding the selfmanagement of heart disease, biomechanics of mobility, and geriatric medicine, respectively, at the University of Michigan Schools of Public Health, Engineering, and Medicine. Liang's teaching interests include international health systems, global aging and health, and methods of health services research. As a fellow of the Gerontological Society of America, Dr. Liang has received two National Institute on Aging MERIT awards. He was the editor for Social Sciences, Journal of Gerontology, and has served on study sections at the National Institutes of Health and the editorial boards of a number of professional journals.
