Funded by the Department of Community Health of the State of Michigan, the Healthy Asian Americans Project (HAAP) is now promoting the Michigan Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (MI BCCCP). We answer some frequently asked questions below. Please contact us if you have advice, comments and suggestions.

Who is eligible?
Women age 40 years old and over
Must have low to moderate income
Must not belong to an HMO (Health Maintenance Organization)
Must have no Medicare part B
Not currently in treatment for breast or cervical cancer
Why get screening?
Cancer is as much a leading cause of death among Asian Americans as in the general U.S. population.
The breast is a leading cancer site among Asian American women. Women over 40 are at greater risk for developing breast cancer. The risk of cervical cancer also increases with age.
Regular screenings can help find cancer in its earlier stages.
90% of breast cancer and 100% of cervical cancer can be cured if detected & treated early.
What services are offered?
Michigan BCCCP
Screening Services
1. Annual clinical breast examination
2. Annual Mammogram
3. Annual Pelvic Exam and Pap Smear Test
4. Education about breast and cervical cancer
Diagnostic Services
1. Diagnostic Mammogram
2. Ultrasound
3. Colposcopy
4. Breast and Cervical Biopsies
5. Counseling about abnormal tests
Breast & Cervical Cancer Treatment
1. Beginning October 2001, women diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer or precancerous lesions through the BCCCP may qualify for Medicaid
2. Treatment may include any of the following:
a. Surgery
b. Radiation
c. Chemotherapy
d. Any combination of the above
e. All medical needs until treatment is complete
HAAP can help you get screened?
Healthy Asian Americans Project – HAAP will help eligible women set up appointments for screening at:
the most convenient time for patients and hospitals
the hospital closest to the patients’ homes
If you do not speak English, please contact us to check for the availability of an interpreter.
