Some Extensions of Axelrod Culture Model of 1997

Lustick, Ian S. Agent-based modeling of collective identity: testing constructivist theory. Journal of Artificial Societies and Social Simulation. 2000 Jan 31. Criticizes similarity-triggered adaptation of traits, and proposed an alternative in which agent's have a repertory of identities which are activated as a function of the environment.

Kennedy, James. Thinking is Social: Experiments with the adaptive culture model. Journal of Conflict Resolution. 1998 Feb; 42(1):56-76. Alters model to copy better neighbor rather than similar neighbor. Finds society can solve hard problems.

Ball, Philip. Culture Vultures. Nature Science Update. 2000 Oct 11.Note: Modification of Finds that above a threshold, diversity at initial stage prevents development of dominant monoculture.

Shibanai, Yasufumi; Yasuno, Satoko, and Ishiguro, Itaru. Effects of Global Information Feedback on Diversity. Journal of Conflict Resolution. 2001 Feb; 45(1):80-96. Finds global media causes faster convergence, thereby supporting minority.

Greig, J. Michael. The End of Geography? Globalization, Communications, and Culture in the International System. Journal of Conflict Resolution . 2002 Apr; 46(2):225-243. Note: Finds that the expansion of communications increases the rate cultures change and the level of cultural homogeneity, but reduces how much cultural attributes predominate after interaction.

Castellano, Claudio; Marsili, Matteo, and Vespignani, Alessandro. Nonequilibrium Phase Transition in a Model for Social Influence. Physical Review Letters. 2000 Oct 16; 85(16):3536-3539. Note: extends culture model finds power law distribution at the phase transition from disorder to order.

The original model with some extensions can be run from a Java applet. For example, try lattice size L=16, features F=5, traits/feature q=10, r=p=0, random initial conditions, and display colors. It also allows noise r, different neighborhood structure p. These authors are physicists, and their site has other extensions. There is a comment on their research, with suggestions for further work.
