About Michigan Baja

What is Baja?
SAE Baja is one of the student competitions organized by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). Students build a prototype off road vehicle intended for mass production and sale as a safer alternative to an ATV. A new car is built from the ground up each year to compete in as many as three competitions against over 200 collegiate teams from around the world. Every component is designed and manufactured by students, using analysis tools and manufacturing processes that are mostly learned outside of class.

Who Can Join?
Surprisingly enough, the Baja team is not limited to just mechanical engineers. In fact, it's not limited to engineers at all. We accept any student enrolled at the University of Michigan whether you are studying engineering or anthropology. We are always looking for enthusiastic individuals who like to work hard and aren't afraid to get dirty. So if you have any interest in cars, designing things, big machines, sparks, or fun, please swing by the Wilson Center and join us!

Why Join?
Baja is an excellent way to meet new people, learn new things, and generally do a lot of fun stuff. You will have a chance to apply things you learn in class on top of things that you won't learn in class. You'll get to see the entire design process behind a race car from sketches on a napkin all the way to a finished prototype. We use state of the art software in our design, and high precision machines in our manufacturing. Of course, the biggest reward is seeing an entire car come together over the course of two semesters and racing!
