When Two Members of a Household Work at UM

Note: U-M benefits for same-sex domestic partners (SSDP) concluded at the end of 2007 to comply with the current Michigan Court of Appeals ruling on same-sex partner benefits. Accordingly, references to U-M recognized Same-Sex Domestic Partnerships in all University policies and documents (other than existing collective bargaining agreements) have been rendered invalid.

If you and your same-sex domestic partner are both employed by the University, when you enroll in benefits, keep in mind:

  • You and your partner cannot be covered as both an employee and a dependent for any University benefit program except employee and dependent life insurance benefits (i.e., you cannot cover each other under the same benefit plan except for dependent life insurance).
  • Each parent can enroll in different benefits plans or options, and each of them can enroll a different child under his or her coverage, but both cannot enroll the same child.

Generally, under your University of Michigan benefits plans, you cannot cover:

  • Anyone who works for or is retired from the University and has his or her own University coverage; or
  • Any dependents who are already covered by a spouse or SSDP who works for or is retired from the University.
  • Any dependent child who works for the University and is eligible for University-sponsored benefits as an employee.

Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the benefits information in this site. However, if any provision on the benefits plans is unclear or ambiguous, the Benefits Office reserves the right to interpret the plan and resolve the problem. If any inconsistency exists between this site and the written plans or contracts, the actual provisions of each benefit plan will govern. The University in its sole discretion may modify, amend, or terminate the benefits provided with respect to any individual receiving benefits, including active employees, retirees, and their spouses, partners, and dependents.
