U-M will transfer to M-CARE the administration of the GradCare medical plan for
non-employee graduate students beginning Jan. 1. Non-employee groups include
department-sponsored graduate students who hold a designated Rackham Fellowship;
National Science Foundation Fellows in designated departments; Michigan Science
Training Program Fellows; graduate students in designated departments; Medical School
students and eligible LSA Regents Fellows. GradCare administration for employed
Graduate Student Instructors, Graduate Student Staff Assistants and Graduate Student
Research Assistants will not change. The University expects that this change for
non-employee graduate students will allow streamlining of the enrollment process,
improve communications with members, and reduce billing concerns for departments and
plan participants.
