| Benzoyl peroxide is a prescription medication that has over-the-counter (OTC) alternatives. Effective October 1, 2005, the University of Michigan Prescription Drug Plan will no longer cover benzoyl peroxide. Comparable benzoyl peroxide products can be purchased without a prescription for $5 to $10, which is less than the average co-pay amount of $19 (mail and retail) paid by U-M plan members for prescription benzoyl peroxide in the first part of 2005.
Over-the-counter medications and any prescription medication that contains the same active ingredient(s) as an existing over-the-counter medication are not covered by the University of Michigan Prescription Drug Plan.
Benzoyl peroxide is the active ingredient in such brand prescription products as: Benzagel®,
Benzashave®,
Brevoxyl®,
Desquam®, and
Triaz®.
You may wish to consult you local pharmacist regarding OTC products comparable to your previously prescribed prescription benzoyl peroxide product. Most retail stores have ‘store brand’ benzoyl peroxide products at very reasonable prices. For your convenience a guide to comparable OTC products is available from the link below.
