Travel Accident Insurance Coverage

Amount of Coverage
Each staff member is insured for a principal sum equal to $50,000 or five times annual salary, whichever is more, but the maximum for any person is $200,000.

"Salary" means the annual salary as defined by the Group Life Insurance Program (exclusive of bonuses, overtime earnings, and non-University earnings) that the staff member was receiving as of the date of the accident.

The total cost of all benefits paid for any one covered accident will not exceed $4 million. If this limit does not allow a full benefit payment to each insured staff member, each staff member's benefit will be prorated.

Those Covered
All members of the staff, full- and part-time, permanent and temporary, are automatically covered as of date of employment. No applications are required.

Scope of Coverage
If injuries result in death or dismemberment within one year after the date of the accident or you become permanently and totally disabled within 180 days after the accident, you may be entitled to a benefit. The benefit will vary according to the type of loss and is described in detail in the master contract.

Coverage on the Premises of the University
Staff members are covered while boarding or alighting from, or riding as a passenger in, a private passenger or automobile while on official University of Michigan business (excluding vacations and everyday travel to and from work). Staff members who drive or serve as members of a crew in a private automobile and/or University bus, truck, or automobile are extended coverage provided that the staff member spends no more than 50% of his/her work day in such vehicles.

Coverage off the Premises of the University
Staff members are covered on a 24-hour-per-day basis while traveling on official University of Michigan business (excluding vacation and everyday travel to or from work). Coverage includes accidents while in an auto or common carrier as well as covered accidental injuries sustained outside of vehicles, such as from falls, in burning buildings, etc.

Insurance not in Force
Insurance will not apply to:

  • Independent contractors or their employees.
  • Independent consultants.
  • Any person assigned to the University who is paid by a non-University organization while here.
  • Staff members while on vacation or leave of absence. (During a sabbatical leave, insurance will apply to travel undertaken for furtherance of approved study and research.)
  • Travel between the place or residence and normal place of business.
  • Suicide or attempts while sane; self-destruction or attempts while insane.
  • Any war or act of war.
  • Service in any armed forces, except when the staff member is ordered into active service for periods of two months or less.
  • Air travel as a pilot or crew member; travel in any aircraft owned, operated, or leased by or on behalf of the University, unless there is prior written agreement.
  • Sickness or disease except pyogenic infections caused by an accidental wound or cut.

Termination of Insurance
Coverage terminates on the date that the staff member ceases to be eligible, the premium is not paid, or the master policy is terminated.

Notice of Claim
Immediately notify the HR/Payroll Service Center to initiate a claim.
