Distribution Credits

Students in Kinesiology are expected to complete a minimum number of credits designated as Humanities (HU), Natural Science (NS), and Social Science (SS). In addition to LS&A courses, Kinesiology will accept some courses from other schools and colleges to fulfill Distribution Requirements. Refer to your Bulletin for the specific requirments in each degree program, and to review the full list of courses eligible to fulfill Distribution requirements.

Minors in the College of LS&A

Kinesiology students have the option of pursuing academic minors offered by LS&A. Limitations may apply on which academic minors may be chosen. Interested students should consult an academic advisor in Kinesiology before making an appointment to see an LS&A program advisor about academic minors offered in LS&A . More information and a full list of LS&A minors.

Kinesiology students should:
  1) pick up a declaration of major/minor form at Kinesiology (though an LSA declaration of major/minor form is acceptable);
  2) bring it to the LSA concentration advisor for a signature when they declare the minor; then
  3) return the form to the Office of Student Services, 3745 Kinesiology Building.

OSS FAQs

What are the undergraduate application deadlines? For incoming Freshmen, the deadline to apply for Fall semester is February 1; for Winter semester, it's November 1. Transfer students' deadlines are March 1 (February 1 for Sport Management majors ONLY) and October 1, respectively. Those wishing to begin their studies during Spring or Summer terms need to contact Andrew Poska in UM Admissions or Shelly Kovacs in the Kinesiology Office of Student Services.

How do I calculate my GPA?
First determine the honor points earned for each course. Add the number of semester hours and the number of earned honor points. Divide the total number of points by the total number of hours granting honor point credit.

For example:

Eng 125
4 credits
A-
(4 x 3.7)
14.8
SM 111
3 cr.
B
(3 x 3)
  9.0
Hist. 160
4 cr.
C+
(4 x 2.3)
  9.2
Psych. 111
4 cr.
B
(4 x 3)
12.0

15
credits total

45.0
honor points

45÷15 = 3.0 GPA

What is a full course load? During fall and winter terms a full load is 12-18 credit hours. During spring and summer half-terms, students may take 6-9 credits to be considered a full time student.

Students need permission from an OSS advisor to take more than 18 credits during the fall/winter terms or 9 credits in the spring /summer half terms.

I want to get involved in Kinesiology student government. Who do I contact? Contact Kerry Winkelseth at 647-2708.

Which Kinesiology Bulletin do I follow? Your degree requirements are in the division bulletin that was in effect when you entered the program. If the requirements change before you graduate, you have the option of following the original degree program or meeting the new requirements.

What do I need to do to declare a major? Complete the on-line form or obtain one from OSS.

I want to take a course at another school. Will it transfer? Before taking a course at another institution, you should check with a staff member in OSS and/or complete an out-of-residence course transfer pre-evaluation form.

Many LS&A transfer credits can by checked at the LS&A transfer credit equivalencies site.

What do I need to do to graduate? You should be checking in with your faculty advisor at least once a term. At the end of your junior year or at the very latest, the beginning of your senior year, you should set up a final degree audit appointment with OSS. At the same time, you should complete a degree/diploma application and return it to the secretary in 3745 Kinesiology Building.

How do I plan my course load? Students are encouraged to take 12 to 14 credit hours their first term on campus. We also suggest that you balance your course load; don't take four courses that each require 200 pages of reading each week. Instead, balance your lecture and lab classes. Take a class in an area that you are interested in, but never had the opportunity to study. The OSS staff is more than willing to discuss various options with you.

Why must I complete a distribution pattern? The faculty in the Division of Kinesiology wish to support the University's committment to liberal arts education. In addition to the professional courses that you are required to take, students must complete 12 cr. in the humanities, 12 cr. in natural science and 12 cr. in social science. For lists of courses that are offered each term that meet distribution requirements, check the LSA Course Guide.

What GPA do I need to make the Dean's List? Students who elect a minimum of 12 graded credits in courses taken on the Ann Arbor campus during an academic term and earn a 3.5 gpa are eligible for the Dean's List. This distinction is posted on a student's transcript by the Registrar's Office, and recipients of this honor are invited to attend the annual Honors Convocation. The criteria for awarding Class Honors are subject to change.
