The
following Kinesiology awards, listed chronologically by year
of establishment, are named in honor of notable former faculty
and Kinesiology graduates. Recipients are chosen by an awards
committee and recognized at the Honors Brunch and Spring Commencement.
In addition, students select a Kinesiology faculty member to
receive the annual Teaching Excellence Award.
The Paul A. Hunsicker Memorial Award honors the memory
of Professor Paul Hunsicker, Chair of the Department of Physical
Education for Men, 1958-70 and Director of the Department of
Physical Education, 1970-76. The award recognizes one graduate
and one undergraduate student who have demonstrated superior
scholarship and professional zeal and promise.
Lucile M. Swift, BS '39, created the Lucile M. Swift Honor Award to financially assist one senior and one graduate student in Kinesiology who demonstrate professional promise, superior scholarship, as well as financial need.

Professor Emeritus Ruth W. Harris initiated the Ruth W. Harris Merit Award upon her retirement in 1986 to recognize and financially assist outstanding Doctoral-level graduate students.
The
Stephen J. Galetti Award honors the first Chair of Kinesiology's
Department of Sport Management who retired in 1988. It is presented
to a first- or second-year student who shows exceptional industriousness
and potential.
The Phyllis Ocker Scholarship is named for Assistant
Professor Phyllis Ocker, Associate Director of Athletics for
Women, 1978-90. It is presented to a female varsity athlete
in Sport Management or Physical Education who has distinguished
herself in academics and athletics.
The Laurie Campbell Award is presented to an outstanding
woman majoring in Physical Education. It was established by
former students of Dr. Campbell, who taught in the Department
of Physical Education for Women from 1929-59, in honor of her
100th birthday July 18, 1994.
Friends of the late Stanley S. Kemp, BS '67, football official
and business and civic leader established the Stan Kemp Scholarship
in 1994. It is designated for juniors and seniors who display
Mr. Kemp's high character, leadership, scholarship, integrity
and idealism, as well as financial need. Five scholarships have
been presented each year since the endowment was established.
The Phebe Martha Scott Achievement Award was established
in 1996 by Virginia Crafts in honor of her friend and colleague,
Phebe Martha Scott, a 1944 Physical Education graduate. This
award recognizes an outstanding female who is outgoing, friendly
and helpful, involved in campus and sports activities, and beginning
her senior year in Physical Education or a related field.
The newest award is the Bernard Patrick Maloy Award for Excellence
in Writing, to be awarded for the first time in Spring 2003.
This award honors the memory of Professor "Pat" Maloy,
a scholar and dedicated teacher who inspired his students to
take an interest in real-world issues of sport and public policy,
and particularly encouraged them to express their thoughts through
clear and concise writing. The cash award is expressly for undergraduate
majors in the Department of Sport Management. |

Student Government (KSG) |
|

Kinwear rules! Kinesiology Student Government members Sara Higley and Emily Herman display school spirit you can wear. Proceeds go to fund KSG projects throughout the year.
|
|
The Kinesiology Student Government (KSG) is an organization that reaches out -- to current Kinesiology students, to potential Kinesiology students, and to the community.
This year KSG sponsored several activities, including a student panel discussion on Martin Luther King Day, which discussed racial bias from several cultural perspectives. They sponsored the Apparel Program and formed the Ambassador Program, which reaches out to prospective Kinesiology students to answer questions and address issues from a student perspective. They helped a needy family during the holidays, and staffed a booth at the Kid’s Fair for Health Awareness. “All of the students involved in Student Government are extremely committed and are continually working to enhance the Division of Kinesiology,” said Emily Herman, KSG President.
All Kinesiology students are welcome to attend the Kinesiology Student Government meetings. Contact KSG at kinesgov03@umich.edu for more info.

| Curriculum
Advisory Group (CAG) |
|
This student group meets each month throughout the school year to discuss Kinesiology curriculum issues. The meetings are facilitated by Pat Van Volkinburg, Academic Programs Coordinator, who then presents student comments at the monthly faculty meetings. Any Kinesiology student can participate -- the meetings are open. This is an opportunity to voice concerns and make a difference!

Kerry Winkelseth, mentor for the Physical Education Club, said that she is proud of the club members because they serve as valuable role models to younger students with their participation in two programs. They volunteer for an after-school program where they lead and teach a variety of physical education activities. U-Go-Girls is a program that meets on Sunday afternoons and introduces girls to a variety of sports hoping to get them started and excited about future participation opportunities. “These activities relate to the PE profession, and the students work the volunteer activities into their busy schedules, giving up their free time to work in the community,” said Kerry.

SBA organizes many events throughout the year, including bringing in guest speakers. Kinesiology Dean Beverly Ulrich is on the right. |

Sport Business Association members are committed to furthering the personal and professional development of students interested in careers in sport. They are committed to spreading the word about Kinesiology’s unique curriculum and level of expertise, and to help students prepare for the future. The group is involved in several activities with units outside Kinesiology, such as the Business School and LS&A.
At a career fair, co-sponsored with the Career Planning and Placement Office, four presenters spoke about the sport industry. SBA also held a Graduate School Fair with Kaplan to discuss preparations for graduate school, and they held an interview workshop for role-play practice and resume review. Members also staffed a booth at the Michigan Union to promote the Detroit Pistons Career Fair, and hosted recruiting efforts for Goldman Sachs on campus.
Future plans include holding a larger career fair as well as additional meetings and networking opportunities to enhance out-of classroom experiences and to develop a local presence.
