Description: The Muslim Unity Center was established under the leadership of Victor (Ghalib) Begg in 1993 and the group’s founding board quickly purchased a former school on Square Lake Road in Bloomfield Hills. The Center recently completed a massive renovation project that built, among other facilities, a spacious and light-filled prayer hall (with a mezzanine for women), a gymnasium, a large banquet facility, an industrial kitchen, new offices, and 8 classrooms. The new construction was designed to fit into a local, suburban landscape that is dominated by large, contemporary houses, but the Center is also clearly a mosque with two domes (one gold and one silver) and a small minaret.
The Unity Center was established to bring together Muslims from diverse ethnic, racial, cultural, and sectarian communities. Open to all Muslims, and celebrating the things that bring their members together as Muslims, the organization is also highly active in interfaith efforts throughout the Detroit area. Unfortunately the mosque’s neighbors were at first reluctant to accommodate the Center’s establishment in their midst. Today, relations with their neighbors and the City of Bloomfield Hills are quite productive.
