U of M Team Pool Championships

Modified Straight Pool Rules / Format
Played like 14.1 continuous. Each player has his own table; you are not competing head-to-head with another player. You are instead trying to pocket as many balls as possible in a set number of innings.
The shooter continues shooting after the initial break, whether he makes a ball or not. Balls pocketed on the break count toward your total for that inning. Failure to pocket a ball on the break, however, is considered a miss (end of inning). This encourages an open break, not a traditional straight pool break.
There must be at least two referee/scorekeeper from opposing teams at the shooting team's table. All teams are invited and encouraged to score other schools' straight pool matches.
Each player is entitled to two coaching time-outs, limited to one minute each. Time-outs must be called by the player, not by anyone else on the team. One coach must be designated; you may not confer with the entire team. There are no bathroom/personal breaks in Straight Pool.
Each member of the team gets 10 turns at the table; run as many balls as you can run without missing.
When you miss the tenth time, you are finished. Your inning totals are tallied up, and that's your individual score for the Straight Pool.
Scratch is a loss of turn (end of inning), and any balls pocketed on that shot do not count; illegally pocketed balls are spotted. The player then takes cue ball in hand behind the head string. If there is only one ball and it is behind the head string, it can be spotted (creating a full rack for the breakout).
You must call your intended pocket. If you pocket a ball in the wrong pocket, the point does not count, and the illegally pocketed ball will be spotted. If you pocket a ball legally and simultaneously pocket other balls, those points DO count.
If you fail to contact a rail after contacting an object ball, it is simply a loss of turn. Hint: you can sacrifice your inning to put yourself in better position for the next shot.
After all four players have had their 10 innings, the team with the most points is the winner of the Straight Pool competition.
Top finishers will be awarded points for their team, toward cumulative team standings:

8-Ball Rules / Format
Double elimination bracket, using BCA league play format.
Random draw for which team plays which.
Each player gets one coaching time-out per game, limited to one minute. Time-outs must be called by the player, not by anyone else on the team. One coach must be designated; you may not confer with the entire team. There are no bathroom/personal breaks in 8-ball.
Each match will be played using a modified version of the BCA league format for 4X4 players (Click here to see the form). This means member of a team plays one game against every member of the opposing team. It is highly unlikely, but possible, that after 16 games there is a tie. See below for tiebreaker provisions.
Top finishers will be awarded points for their team, toward cumulative team standings:

8-Ball Tie Breaker
- If in a round of 8-ball the two teams split games (2-2) and the points total is a tie, that round is a wash.
- If after all rounds of 8-ball the number of Wins is tied at 2-2, the total number of balls pocketed determines the winner. Note: it is possible that a team can win more games than its opponent but still lose the match. The determining factor in this unlikely (but possible) occurence is balls pocketed, not games won. Every ball counts!
- If after all rounds of 8-ball the number of games won is tied, there will be a playoff.
- All four teammates will play.
- Lag for the break (separately on each table). Each team member plays a game (4 total).
- If after this the games are split 2-2, there will be another playoff.
- Each team picks its best player. Lag for the break; alternate breaks after that. Race to 2.
- No bonus points are accumulated during the 8-Ball Tie Breaker.
9-Ball Scotch Doubles Rules / Format: New in 2012

No points if you break in the 9 and simultaneously foul.
Combos and caroms do not count for bonus points as a "Break and Run," except an 8-9 combination. This was unanimously voted by Captains and Coaches in 2006.
9-Ball Tie Breaker
- If in a round of 9-ball the two teams have won an equal number of games, that round is a wash.
- The winning team is the team that wins the most rounds.
- If after all rounds of 9-ball the number of games won is tied, there will be a playoff.

All Events
It is possible, however unlikely, that after all rounds of play in all 3 events, there is a tie for points total. If this happens, there will be a tie breaker.
All-Events Tie Breaker
- Each team picks one player for 8-ball, one player for modified straight pool, and two players for 9-ball.
- 8-ball - Race to 2.
- 9-ball - Race to 3.
- Modified Straight Pool - 5 innings for high cumulative score.
- The team that wins at least two of the above contests wins the UMTPC.
- No bonus points are accumulated during the All-Events Tie Breaker.
- If either team opts to leave the tournament site before the tournament finishes, they concede the title.
