Applying to the Biophysics Graduate Program

Admission to the doctoral program in Biophysics requires a strong undergraduate background in at least one of the following: physics, chemistry, biochemistry, engineering, or biology.

Students must take the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) exam.  Students whose transcript may not reflect their mastery of a subject area are encouraged to also take the appropriate advanced subject test. Students whose native language is not English are required to demonstrate proficiency in English by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or an equivalent examination.

Two ways to apply

Students may apply to the Biophysics Interdepartmental Graduate Program directly or through the Program in Biomedical Sciences (PIBS). The PIBS program gives the student the flexibility to choose Biophysics or any of 12 other biomedical science doctoral programs at the end of the first year of study. This program would be suitable for most applicants with some background in biology or biochemistry. Usually students with Physics backgrounds prefer to apply to Biophysics direcly.

PIBS

To apply through PIBS, follow the PIBS application instructions carefully while you complete the online application. On the first page, select Biophysics as your first choice. Later in the application select Biophysics (PIBS) as your area of concentration. The PIBS Program Code is 01416. Letters of recommendation are submitted online or sent to the PIBS office. Note that International applicants must submit a pre-application first. The deadline for all PIBS applications is Dec 31, 2006. Contact pibs@umich.edu if you have problems or questions.

Direct

To apply directly to the Biophysics Graduate Program, follow the instructions for the online application at the Rackham Graduate School. When prompted for the Program of Study select Biophysics Ph.D. Letters of recommendation are submitted online or to the Biophysics program. All supplementary material, applications, and application fee should be received by January 10, 2007 for admission in Fall 2007. Contact biophysics@umich.edu if you have questions.
